How is personal training different from physical therapy?
Physical therapy addresses rehabilitation needs. Personal training provides ongoing fitness coaching within the activity guidance and restrictions you receive from your treating team. Completing physical therapy does not automatically mean that every exercise is appropriate.
Ellen is a NASM-certified personal trainer and Corrective Exercise Specialist, not a substitute for your surgeon or physical therapist. Her role is to adapt fitness sessions to your goals and the precautions you bring from your healthcare team.
What might you want to work toward after rehabilitation?
Your priorities may be feeling stronger for everyday tasks, returning to regular exercise, or building confidence for travel and hobbies. Discuss those priorities with Ellen along with any limits on movement or loading. Your replacement, recovery, and medical guidance determine what is appropriate; this guide does not prescribe a routine.
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons explains that returning to activity after hip replacement takes time and may require changing how you perform some activities. Its activity guidance provides general context; your own treating team provides your individual instructions.
One couple’s experience with adapted training
The following is a client’s description of their experience, not a clinical assessment or a promise about stress on an artificial joint.
Nicki and Myron describe the value they found in coaching adapted to their circumstances. Your goals and appropriate activities may differ.
Training as a couple can make it easier to build a shared routine, even when each person has different goals. Learn more about semi-private sessions or how in-home training works.
